Sciatica During Pregnancy & Chiropractic in St. Petersburg, FL

That zinging, burning pain that shoots from your low back or buttock down your leg can stop you mid-step and make sleep feel impossible. Pregnancy sciatica is common, and very often it's coming from the pelvis and the muscles around it. At Blossom Family Chiropractic in St. Pete, our Webster-certified team gently eases the pressure so you can get back to walking, sleeping and enjoying your pregnancy.

What causes sciatica during pregnancy?

Sciatica is pain, tingling or numbness that travels along the sciatic nerve, from the low back or buttock down the back of the leg. In pregnancy, it’s most often caused by pelvic and SI joint imbalance or a tight piriformis muscle irritating the nerve, rather than a herniated disc.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It runs through the pelvis and right underneath (and sometimes through) the piriformis muscle deep in your glute.

As your belly grows, your posture shifts forward, your ligaments loosen and your pelvic joints can move unevenly. The muscles around the pelvis tighten to compensate, and that tension can squeeze or irritate the sciatic nerve.

What are the signs of pregnancy sciatica?

  • Sharp, shooting or burning pain in one buttock or down the back of one leg
  • Tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that flares when standing up, walking, climbing stairs or rolling over
  • Deep glute pain, especially after sitting
  • Trouble finding a comfortable position to sleep

Sciatica often travels with pelvic pain and SPD and general back pain.

How does chiropractic help sciatica during pregnancy?

We gently balance the sacrum, SI joints and pelvis so they move evenly, which takes pressure off the nerve. The Webster Technique includes a piriformis release and a psoas release, two muscles that commonly contribute to pregnancy sciatica.

Your first visit includes a history, a gentle exam and INSiGHT CLA scans, all on supportive pregnancy pillows. We’re at 360 Central Ave, Suite 1200 in downtown St. Petersburg. Many mamas notice relief within the first few visits.
