Sciatica & Chiropractic in St. Petersburg, FL

That burning, electric pain that runs from your low back or buttock down your leg can make sitting, standing, driving and sleeping miserable. Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and finding what's irritating the nerve is the key to lasting relief. At Blossom Family Chiropractic in downtown St. Pete, we pinpoint the source and help take the pressure off, without drugs or surgery whenever possible.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that travels along the sciatic nerve, from the low back through the buttock and down the back of the leg. It’s caused by irritation or compression of the nerve or its roots in the lower spine.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body. It’s formed from nerve roots in the lower back and travels through the pelvis and deep hip muscles on its way to the foot.

Common causes include a bulging or herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis), SI joint dysfunction and a tight piriformis muscle pressing on the nerve. Long hours of sitting, heavy lifting and old injuries can all set the stage.

What are the signs of sciatica?

  • Sharp, shooting or burning pain down one leg
  • Pain that’s worse when sitting, coughing, sneezing or bending
  • Tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the leg or foot
  • Deep pain in one buttock
  • Leg or foot weakness
  • Low back pain (though some people have leg pain only)

Sciatica often overlaps with general back pain. If you’re pregnant, see our page on sciatica during pregnancy.

How does chiropractic help sciatica?

We start by finding the source: disc, joint, muscle or a combination. Then we use specific, gentle adjustments to restore motion to the lower spine and pelvis, reduce pressure on the nerve and ease muscle guarding. For disc-related pain, we choose techniques that are appropriate for discs. Your first visit includes a INSiGHT CLA scans and digital X-rays. We’re located at 360 Central Ave, Suite 1200 in downtown St. Petersburg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help sciatica?
Yes, for many people. Chiropractic care is a common, drug-free option for sciatica. At Blossom Family Chiropractic in St. Petersburg, we find what’s irritating the nerve (a disc, joint or muscle) and use targeted adjustments and to relieve pressure on it.
In most cases, yes. We tailor techniques to disc problems and avoid positions that aggravate the nerve. If we find signs that you need imaging or a specialist, we’ll refer you.
Many sciatica episodes improve within 4–6 weeks with conservative care. Pain that lasts longer or keeps coming back often needs a plan that addresses the underlying cause.
Stay gently active. Short walks and changing positions often help more than bed rest. Avoid long periods of sitting and heavy lifting during a flare-up.
