Torticollis, Plagiocephaly & Chiropractic in St. Petersburg, FL

If your baby always looks one way, fights feeding on one side, or you've noticed a flat spot on their head, you're not imagining it. These are common signs of torticollis and plagiocephaly, and early support makes a real difference. At Blossom Family Chiropractic in St. Pete, we gently help babies move more freely, alongside their pediatrician and physical therapist.

What are torticollis and plagiocephaly?

Torticollis is tightness in a baby’s neck muscles, usually the sternocleidomastoid, that causes the head to tilt to one side and turn toward the other. Plagiocephaly is a flattened area on the back or side of the head, often caused by a baby resting on the same spot again and again.

The two often go together. When a baby can’t comfortably turn their head both ways, they tend to lie on the same side, and their soft, growing skull can flatten in that spot.

Torticollis can start in the womb from cramped positioning, or during birth from a long labor, breech position or assisted delivery. The tight muscles and restricted joints in the neck can also affect how comfortably your baby feeds, sleeps and moves.

What are the signs of torticollis and plagiocephaly?

  • Head tilting to one side in photos or car seat
  • Always turning to look the same direction
  • Feeding easily on one breast but fighting the other
  • A flat spot on the back or one side of the head
  • One ear sitting further forward, or facial asymmetry
  • Hating tummy time or rolling only one way

Torticollis often shows up with latching difficulties, reflux and fussiness, since a tight neck makes feeding and settling harder.

How does chiropractic help torticollis and plagiocephaly?

We gently release restrictions in your baby’s neck, upper back and skull so they can turn their head more evenly. When your baby moves comfortably in both directions, it’s easier for them to vary their head position, which gives a flat spot the chance to round out as they grow.

Chiropractic works beautifully alongside pediatric physical therapy. PT focuses on stretching and strengthening muscles; we focus on joint motion and the nervous system that controls those muscles. We’ll also give you simple positioning and tummy time tips to use at home.

Your baby’s first visit includes a history, a gentle exam of neck motion and head shape, and INSiGHT CLA scans. Adjustments use light fingertip pressure, never forceful twisting.

We’re in downtown St. Petersburg at 360 Central Ave, Suite 1200. Starting early matters, since the skull is most moldable in the first months of life.

Why do St. Pete families choose Blossom for torticollis?

Our doctors have 250+ hours of ICPA pediatric training and experience caring for newborns. Dr. Savy Ford and Dr. Peyton Gallentine review cases together and coordinate with your baby’s physical therapist or pediatrician when needed.

We use INSiGHT CLA scanning to track nervous system changes, and we measure progress in range of motion so you can see the change, visit by visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with torticollis?
Many St. Petersburg parents bring their babies to Blossom Family Chiropractic for torticollis. Gentle adjustments help release neck and upper back restrictions so babies can turn their heads more evenly. It works well alongside physical therapy and home stretches.
Chiropractic doesn’t reshape the skull directly. By helping your baby move their neck freely in both directions, it makes it easier for them to change head positions, which gives the flattened area a chance to round out as they grow. Moderate to severe cases may still need a helmet evaluation.
Common causes include cramped positioning in the womb, breech position, a long or difficult labor, and assisted deliveries with vacuum or forceps, or c-section. Spending lots of time in car seats, bouncers and swings can make it worse.
It depends on your baby’s age and how long the tightness has been there. Many parents notice easier turning within a few weeks of consistent care and home exercises. Earlier is better, since babies’ skulls reshape most easily in the first months.
