Sciatica is a caused when there is pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve. It is a distracting pain that begins in the lower back and can extend down one or both legs. The pain can vary from a very sharp pain to a dull, achy, or burning sensation, and usually worsens with extended periods of sitting or standing.
Pressure on the sciatic nerve can be caused by a bulging or herniated disk, a misaligned vertebra (subluxation), or from spinal degeneration (arthritis). The piriformis muscle can also irritate the sciatic nerve and create a similar type pain. This is extremely common during pregnancy and is known as “piriformis syndrome.”
